I found this article on
cnn.com (written for oprah.com, clearly aimed at a
female audience) about apologizing - real, sincere
apologizing. What a beauitful thing.
The article makes some valid points such as real apologizing
vs. the kind of apologizing that switches the blame to the
injured party as in, "I'm sorry you feel that way", or,
"I'm sorry you are such an [redacted]", and apologizing
without explaining. Sometimes, "I'm sorry", without recognition
or admission of any transgression just isn't valid or meaningful,
according to this article, since the apologizer doesn't
actually admit to doing anything wrong.
Further the article states that there is overapologizing
and underapologizing. I tend to commit both crimes but I
am working on it. Like the other day when that guy called
me a, "Crack Ho", on High Street. My first impulse would
usually be to overapologize for being in his way but instead
I expletively underapologized.
To summarize the article in my own worlds; The value of
a real apology is priceless and the lack of apology, according
to Mrs. Freud (or someone), is like, bad.
At some point, if you are working towards your partially-evolved-human-being
tapestry belt (working your way up to the orange Dali Llama
belt), you might have to consider the possibility that just
*maybe* you are not the one human being to ever walk the
earth who is always right and that you might even be wrong
sometimes. Snap! I am wrong hourly, actually. Game:
Find the spelling error in the above paragraph.
Then I ran out to do errands in Holyoke, where a certain
ne plus ultra style of driving is the norm and an opportunity
for sang-froid-ish restraint and apology awaits at every
intersection. Inevitably I was forced to go through the
steps in the article;
1. Full acknowledgment of the offense
I apologized for throwing my car into reverse at the intersection
of Dwight and O'Connell Streets and took full responsibility
for purposely slamming into the car behind me. (When the
police came I changed my story).
2. An explanation
I explained to the biotech (code word) in the car behind
me that yelling and gesturing at me for not pulling into
traffic in front of a tractor trailer made me nervous and
forget which was first and which was reverse. (I was on
empty so there wasn't much chance of exploding).
3. Genuine expression of remorse
I said I was really, truly sorry.
4. Reparations for damage
I gave her a dime bag of my homemade pesto (although
admittedly it was from the batch with too much sea salt
in it) and right then the song, "You make me feel brand new", by The Stylistics
came on the radio on 103.3 and so I sang it to her, from
the roof of her car.
What does this have to do with the
above picture? Touching the exhibit is wrong, and, that
guy used to be in The Stylistics.
Later I was in the alley with my imaginary friends and a
huge crunchy bug flew into my hair and as I was freaking
out and wildly shaking it loose one of my neighbors walked
by and yelled hello. Karma gets you every time.
Anyway-this post started as an apology to Ann Shanahan and
Lyn Horan and everyone in the show at the NCA because I
failed to post it last week in time for the reception. I
didn't even know about it till someone told me they had
gone to it. I run my email program off my USB stick so it
will be portable (I think of it as my faux laptop) and when
I plugged it in in San Francisco to do my newsletter from
a computer there, my newsletter folder (and every folder)
I don't know what went wrong but it's my fault. I think
I must have redirected the emails to a folder on my hard
drive. So all submissions that came in before I left on
the 4th were in my folder here while I was there and so
it got lost. I am really sorry about that. I wish someone
had told me. For that I'd have made an addendum issue. I
will make addendums when I am wrong. Maybe I should call
them reparations for damage. So, to everyone that was affected
by that ommission, I am sorry and I will give you homemade
pesto from the not-so-sea-salty batch. Although, it's not
as good as Maureen Scanlon's pesto.

Mo Ringey began working in glass about 12 years ago when her car
window was smashed outside her Boston apartment, a fate common to many cars in
her neighborhood. "Every morning I stepped over a fresh pile of someone else's
window remnants, hardly giving it a thought," she explained. "Strangely, the
fact that I was the victim this time made my own personal pile of glass look
quite brilliant and hopeful." She saved the broken pieces and eventually made a
vase. The project so inspired her that she went on to develop a technique for
working with broken window shards.
Included in the exhibition are a
transformed wringer washing machine, two refrigerators, a toaster, a mailbox and
other ordinary domestic objects that evoke memories from her childhood. Mo
describes these vintage objects as "bookmarks to a past place and time. I see
the process of adding glass as 'psychic reupholstering' that turns a fridge into
a jewelry box, a washing machine into a cooler, repurposing them into quixotic

This series of images is the
creative work of two photographers BRUCE
and VICTOR HOYT
; each with
a unique approach to their craft.
Bruce Barone's work is
contemplative. He seeks the common thread that runs through the seasons. It is
how a place changes, yet remains the same, that gives his work power. In this
series of images of The Lower Mill Pond, you will find this subtle thread in the
old posts, the distant mountains, and curve of the shoreline. You will also see
the hand of time as it paints new faces on the scene. This is the anchor
of the show; the theme that binds it together.
Victor Hoyt has a less thematic
style. He is interested in fleeting moments. The way the sun casts a shadow
across a railing, or a damsel fly pauses on a flower bud. Once seen, these
moments become memory, fading briefly to be replaced by another, and another.
The photographs provide a counterpoint to The Lower Mill Pond. They give the
viewer a window into some of the beautiful places that surround our little

The Corner Boys, a fabulous Celtic foursome out of Holyoke, will be
performing by P.I. Pond in Bernardston at 7:00 on Thursday, July 26th as part of
Cushman Library's "Thursday Night Concerts by the Pond" series. The Boys
will truly delight the audience with flutes, whistles, guitars, banjos, Uilleann
pipes, mandolins, melodeon, button box, bird calls and more as they share a
varied and extremely enjoyable selection of Celtic tunes and

This workshop is an opportunity to explore the painterly printmaking
processes of Monotype. It brings together three artists each with a novel
approach to monprinting as faculty. Liz Chalfin will introduce
additive methods, stenciling and layering on the first day. Anita
Hunt will bring viscosity printing into the mix the following day and Joyce
Silverstone will teach transfer drawing and alternative plates on the
third. Each artist will demonstrate in the morning leaving students
the afternoon to try their hand at all the techniques. The last two
days will be work days where participants can delve into their own work and
develop rich and layered prints. Water-based inks are capable of producing a
watercolor-like quality that spans the full range of transparency as well as
permiting the artist to develop opacity through layering and thickness of

Easthampton, a monthly, self-guided walking tour of arts and culture, has added
a proposal page to its website where visual, music and performance artists can
outline what they would like to show or perform if given the opportunity.
All the locations that participate in Art Walk Easthampton can view the
submissions for possible inclusion in an upcoming event. The talent describes
the work, provides images, identifies the types of venues they would like to be
in, the dates they are available and provides contact information. If there's a
match between the submission and the venue's interest, the venue contacts the
talent directly to handle booking arrangements.

The window is quite large, and has three panels, each one about 6' X 6',
and is about 24" deep. It is exposed to intense sunlight in the morning; the
heat of the sun plus the narrowness of the window make it inappropriate to
display most musical instruments.
However, the sunlight doesn't hurt
most artwork since it's only exposed for a month to six weeks. I normally pay
$150 to the artist who installs the window, and work out a consignment agreement
for the store to take a percentage of the price if the art is for sale and we
manage to sell some of it.
The artwork can be freestanding, lean against
a wall at the back of the window that's about three feet high, or (if it's not
heavy) be hung from the ceiling.
It's great when the art can have a musical
theme, but it's not necessary. Because of its highly visible commercial
location, the work should have a mainstream appeal and not have themes which
could be offensive. Small pieces don't work well since the window is so large.

Valley CDC Expands Business Services to Include Credit
March 23, 2007: Valley Community
Development Corporation (Valley CDC), a community-based non-profit organization,
is now offering personal credit counseling. This free one-on-one counseling is
available to people who want to open a small business in Valley CDC's service
area - Easthampton, Northampton, Hadley & Amherst. Current small business
owners with 20 or fewer employees are also eligible. There are no income
restrictions. This free credit counseling is available through June of 2007 via
a grant from the Massachusetts Office of Business and Technology.
According to David Plaut, Small Business Credit Counselor for Valley CDC,
"We know that credit scores play a very significant role when applying for a
business loan. We want our clients to secure financing, so we set them up for
success. Credit reports and credit scoring can be confusing. We can decipher
that information and help people boost their scores."
Valley CDC has been helping entrepreneurs start new enterprises and
expand existing small businesses for more than 18 years. Since 2003, Valley CDC
has counseled more than 250 individuals and businesses, and helped them acquire
more than $470,000 in funding from conventional banks and community loan funds.
Valley CDC's clients include companies in many diverse businesses, including
restaurants, manufacturers, beauty salons, spas, artists and artisans, clothing
designers, and retailers.
According to Joanne Campbell, Executive Director of Valley CDC, "We are
very excited to be able to expand our small business technical services to
include credit counseling. Our current grant will fund this service until June
30, 2007, so we hope that local entrepreneurs act on this opportunity quickly.

People frequently ask me why their event listing didn't make it into the
Valley Advocate. I guess it would seem that because I currently have a
blog on their site that I might have some insight. I might have thought that too
except that I am me and I know otherwise. My own events (ones that I am
in) rarely make it into the free listings section so I have long wondered if I
have that merde touch because as you can bet, my appreciation for and
understanding of how things should be formatted is pretty well thought. But
because I keep hearing more and more how upset people are (me too) when events
are submitted in time and perfectly formatted yet don't make it in, I wrote to
the Valley Advocate to ask why. Here is Tom Sturm's (listing editor person)
P.S. from Mo - I agree with not accepting
attached text or PDFs. If one of us has to open the attachment and paste all the
text into an email I agree that it should be the person who benefits from having
the text included in the listings. And PDFs mean a LOT of work for the person
posting your event which is why I refuse to accept them. It would mean buying
acrobat which I cannot afford and it would also mean an extra hour to compile
your listing. But I remain dissappointed that my own last few shows went

OK, I wanted to see what all hub bub was about regarding this
submission form and the endless pain and angst associated with

that presumptuous? I pay non-counterfeit $$ to Constant Contact to put out this
newsletter. I pay 6-8 hours a week of my time to create this newsletter in order
to provide you with a FREE place to
promote your event/class/shop etc. I could alternately use that time earning
money for rent. ALL I ask is that you do
your part and use the submission form (It works. It is NOT broken. Error
messages are generated when you somehow do not follow the extremely simple
guidelines. It seems to work for everyone but you.) and resize your own images.
If one of us has to fix your image shouldn't it
be you? Do you not have even 2 minutes of work to do for yourself or is
it all somehow my sole responsibility? Yes, I am becoming disheartened by the
people who supposedly do not know how to size an image. If you are literate, you
can resize your image. If you are not literate then you won't even know when I
refuse to add your event, so I guess you won't mind that it has been rejected?

BUSTED! So, you don't ever read
the newsletter, you just submit things to it? I initiated the form submission
system on March 7th. Evidently you have not read a newsletter since April. This
newsletter is all for one and one for all. If you don't at all care what your
peers are doing then how can you expect them to care about your event? Karma
knows if you are a one way street.

The form is screwed up and keeps giving me
errors messages. I am so sick of trying and getting error messages. Can I make
my submission via email?

The form does work. It works for 98% of the people
who use it weekly to submit properly sized images. I test it regularly in
Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera. Try using one of these browsers. In every
single case where I gave in and accepted an email submission the image attached
was WELL over 100k. The last few were 11 mgs, 22 mgs and 25 mgs respectively. I
can upload no more than 40k per image to constant contact so I am willing to do
some work on each image but not that much. 100k is the absolute maximum size I,
and the form, will accept.
I don't know
how to resize my image. Will you do it for me?

In between yachting and vacationing, I spend some time learning to
use photoshop etc. At the bottom of the submission form, there are links to
sites that will resize your images for FREE. Take a few minutes to explore those

If it is not there it was either so
large as to be rejected by my server or it wasn't properly attached. You get a
receipt for your submission. If an image made it through, it will be listed as
such at the bottom of your receipt. If I don't get an image with a submission I
simply add the text.

I cut and paste the text I receive. I
don't proof it. It is the responsibility of the submitting person to edit their
own text. Spell checking is free. There are FREE sites that will do this for

You didn't include it in your
submission. I don't proof. The form prompts you to include where and when your
event is. Use it as your guide. I cut and paste exactly what you submit.
Look, I am REALLY busy with my upcoming
show and don't have time to mess with your ****ing form. Can't you just take an
email submission and do it for me? It will only take you a few minutes.
Sometimes in a relationship both parties need to spend some time
making it work.

my life or to find something to do. Call me at midnight one of these nights when
I am finishing up the day's work. I will walk you through the steps to figure
out how to change the size of an image.

night before. This is not a crazy deadline. It allows for a small lead time for

attached every day. Simply by doing this newsletter and having my email address
out there opens me up to many malicious emails. I empathize. Doing the
newsletter means letting down my own firewall. I can't accommodate yours.
