Since last week we have had a whole pile of new subscribers
sign up from near and far... Holyoke, Northampton, Nashville,
Montreal, NYC, Aspen, Mount Airy, NC (Andy Griffith's
birthplace), San Francisco, UK, Palm Beach Gardens and
Tanzania (for real, all of it).
Ok, it's not like all those people randomly heard about
our newsletter and just *had* to sign up, I already
knew them. But still, does this not make our newsletter
international?
Maybe they
are just indulging me by signing up.
Come to think of it, I just signed some of them up
without even asking first so maybe I am indulging
myself.
What if, as it turned out, everyone has just been
indulging me...like, since birth?

Omaha, NE - Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts Residency
The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts is a nonprofit organization
that supports visual artists by providing studios, living
space, and monthly stipends in a year-round residency program
located in Omaha, Nebraska.
Applicants are juried twice a year by an independent panel
of arts professionals. Residencies are awarded for a period
of 3 months.
While all visual artists in any medium are welcome to apply,
Bemis Center facilities are particularly well-suited to sculpture,
installations, video, photography and large-scale painting
or mixed media work.~

of the Future art contest

The World
Future Society is now seeking submissions for its 2006
Visions of the Future art contest to find the most compelling
visual imagery of the world we are building--or hope
to build.
(glass- upholstered Airstreams come to mind).
Submissions may reflect any of the suggested categories
(resources, relationships, exploration, science and
society, etc.) or one of the artist's choosing.
The winner will receive $500, a one-year membership
in the World Future Society, and a scholarship to attend
WorldFuture 2006, the Society's annual meeting in Toronto,
July 28-30. The deadline for submissions is April 29,
2006.

CHRISTIN COUTURE
DECKS OUT THE MASSACHUSETTS REVIEW

The most recent
issue of The Massachusetts Review Winter 2005/2006 features
a cover and an eight page section of paintings by Christin
Couture, with an essay by Faye Woolfe.
The subject of the paintings are infants and children
inspired by Victorian photography. A selection of these
'totz' has been exhibited at Dabora Gallery in Brooklyn,
Taber Gallery in Holyoke, and The DeCordova Museum in
Lincoln.
Faye Woolfe first wrote about Couture's work in the
late 1970's as an arts writer for the Valley Advocate.
An independent quarterly of literature, the arts, and
public affairs, The Massachusetts Review has
deep local roots but a broad appeal, with subscribers
spread across the U.S. and abroad.
It is published with the support and cooperation of
Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges,
and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The Watkins
Gallery, 142 Main Street, second floor, is showing
"Winter Whites" this month, featuring woodcut prints
by Joshua Rome. Rome's talent is well-established in
Japan where he has had more than 75 successful shows.
Gallery goers in New York and San Francisco, as well
as in Japan, have enjoyed his winter snow scenes.
The Oxbow
Gallery, 275 Pleasant Street, shows the work of
Marion Miller, an artist whose themes range from figural
to landscapes.

A.P.E.
Gallery, Thorne's Market, third floor, will have
two offerings. The first show tells the story of the
hurt and power of both Caroline Lambert— "Hand Built
Books" and Jill Turner—"Video Performance Shorts." The
second A.P.E exhibition is "Where are We Going?" paintings
by Len Gerwick.
Alfredo's Gallery, 6 Crafts Avenue, continues
its show of black and white photography, "Moments in
New England and Beyond," by Robert Hallock, a University
of Massachusetts professor.
Northampton Center for the Arts, 17 New South Street,
third floor, fabric artist Belinda Lyons Zucker presents
"Grandmother: Images in Clay and Cloth."
This month's Arts Night Out coincides with the first
of the Center's three "World of Piano" jazz concerts.

Looking for actors and child actors of African- American descent
for the Emerson College Film 3 project, "Overjoyed", a heartwarming
comedy loosely based on a story about a young boy's encounter
with Stevie Wonder in a Baptist Church. Among the roles being
cast:
Jimmy Edwards: African-American male, 8.
Ms. Edwards: African-American female, late 30s.
Stevie Wonder: Open to any African-American male ages 30-45.
